The Death of the Promise is the final book in Thomas Fitzhugh Sheets’s On That Day trilogy. It is a deep and insightful meditation on the state of the world and the state of modern Christianity. Yet, as it elucidates upon the religious and political aspects of present society, it also gives glimpses of the spiritual reckoning that is to be had, the journey towards a new horizon with God, and the revelation of the Land of the Promise.

The Lord had said to Abram, “Go from your country, your people, and your father’s household to the land I will show you.

Genesis 12:1

The Land of the Promise in the Old Testament

The Promised Land that is spoken about in the Bible, the destination of the Israelites after their enslavement in Egypt, was a physical realm. The new Promised Land will be tied to the physical world, but it will largely be spiritual when it truly comes in the coming age.

Yet, it is still important to inform yourself about the Promised Land that was Canaan. The blueprint that is written in the Bible about the Israelites’ acquisition of it will no doubt serve as a template for the spiritual Promised Land.

Now, the journey to Canaan was fraught with challenges. Being a newly emancipated people, the Israelites were tempted to return to their former state of enslavement because of trials of faith and moments of doubt.

These trials were not merely obstacles to overcome; they were actually opportunities for growth, tests of their commitment to God, and crucial steps in preparing them for the inheritance that awaited.

This exodus across a vast desert was not just a liberation from physical oppression. It was a symbolic representation of the soul’s yearning for God and freedom from the shackles of sin and spiritual stagnation.

Similarly, our spiritual journey will likely follow that reality also.

Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

John 14:6

A Journey Towards a New Horizon with God

While the physicality of Canaan served to anchor the spiritual depth of the Promised Land, the coming Promised Land will not be confined to a specific place or time. It will be somewhere spiritual, accessible to all those who have Christ inside their hearts.

The Promised Land of Christ will be a haven, a place of rest, within which Christians will experience a complete release from the hardships of the modern world and the uncertainties of physical existence. No longer will their minds be plagued by the anxieties and worries of the mortal world. Instead, they will be filled with quiet confidence in God’s unwavering love and care.

This rest is not inactivity but a state of being centered in God, allowing Christians to act according to His will from a place of peace and strength.

As the Promised Land was described as a land flowing with milk and honey, so too will the spiritual realm signify God’s abundant blessings. This is not a physical abundance like food and drink but an abundance of God’s grace. Upon this Promised Land of the spirit, His love will be overflowing and His mercy rich without end.

This will be an abundance that fills the spiritual hunger within everyone, satisfying their deepest longings and empowering them to live an eternity of purpose and joy beneath God’s light.

The presence of God will be central to the Promised Land as it was in Canaan. This infinite and eternal presence is not limited to specific places or times; it’s a reality people can experience wherever they are whenever they turn their hearts toward God.

The pursuit of the spiritual Promised Land is an ongoing journey.

Even when Christians experience moments of victory and glimpses of the Promised Land, they must continue to press forward.

The journey is not about arriving at a destination; it’s about the transformation that takes place within us along the way.

The journey towards a new horizon with God is about becoming more like Christ, reflecting His character, and living a life that is pleasing to Him. From despair to hope, the Promised Land serves as a light to the lives of many Christians.
